On 24 June 2013, Liberal Democrat Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander announced a massive expansion of the Coalition Government's ground-breaking Troubled Families Programme. An additional £200 million is to be invested to extend intensive help to 400,000 high risk families so they can get to grips with their problems before they spiral out of control.

Hertfordshire Caught Out Counting Rejected Cardboard as “Recycled” Material

Hertfordshire has for a long time been collecting cardboard with green waste for composting. When the proportion of cardboard was low enough that was fine and good quality compost resulted. Now with higher quantities, and especially with the inclusion of the new plastic laminated cardboard, significant quantities of cardboard have had to be removed from the composting process and sent to landfill.

Decisive Win for Liberal Democrats in Berkhamsted East By Election on 13th June

The by election was caused by the death of the former Liberal Democrat councillor, John Lythgoe, and was heavily contested by the Liberal Democrats, Conservatives and by UKIP. The campaigns were followed with keen interest by the electorate and the turnout of 25% was reasonably high for a town council by election. The result (shown below) restores the position of two Liberal Democrats and 13 Conservatives on Berkhamsted Town Council. Berkhamsted Town Council, East Ward Lib Dem 456 41% ( + 4%) Danny Bonnett Con 315 28% ( - 15%) UKIP 184 16% ( + 16%) LAB 92 8% GRN 75 7% IND n/a ( - 20%) Turnout 25%
