Work has started on a new one way system for Hemel Hempstead Old Town. The works are being carried out on behalf of Dacorum Borough Council and Hertfordshire County Council.
Although the English Regional organisations have been greatly reduced, the East of England Region continues informally as a convenient structure for local authorities to co-ordinate matters of common interest. Two such obvious and important issues are Transport and Infrastructure Development. The region also remains as the main unit for receiving European funding for local projects.
Hertfordshire has for a long time been collecting cardboard with green waste for composting. When the proportion of cardboard was low enough that was fine and good quality compost resulted. Now with higher quantities, and especially with the inclusion of the new plastic laminated cardboard, significant quantities of cardboard have had to be removed from the composting process and sent to landfill.
Local Liberal Democrat activists in West Herts have had a busy year so far. Teams from Dacorum have been involved in a series of elections both local and further afield ... and at every level.
The by election was caused by the death of the former Liberal Democrat councillor, John Lythgoe, and was heavily contested by the Liberal Democrats, Conservatives and by UKIP. The campaigns were followed with keen interest by the electorate and the turnout of 25% was reasonably high for a town council by election. The result (shown below) restores the position of two Liberal Democrats and 13 Conservatives on Berkhamsted Town Council. Following the sad death of John Lythgoe of Hall Park, Berkhamsted,the former Liberal Democrat Town Councillor, a By Election is to be held on Thursday June 13th to fill the vacancy in the Berkhamsted East Ward of the Berkhamsted Town Council.

Liberal Democrat MP for Burnley, Gordon Birtwistle, who has been campaigning for years for help for manufacturing firms was delighted last December when an important tax relief measure was announced. Now Gordon, Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Party Committee on Business, Innovation and Skills has seen this help take effect at the start of this financial year.
Newly re-elected Hertfordshire County Councillor for Tring & the Villages, Nick Hollinghurst, is a member of the Orchard Children's Centre's Governance Group and attended yesterday's Governance Meeting in Dundale Primary School, Silk Mill Way, Tring. The centre has become an important community hub within the area.
Thursday 9th May saw the ground floor hall at the New Mill Baptist Church filled with a greater than usual number of people who had called in for lunch and the company of their friends. This particular day was the first anniversary of the setting up of a regular Thursday lunchtime café by the Minister, Mr Andrew Openshaw and his wife Kate. Called "Le Moulin" (the Mill), a name which combines a reference to the location as well as to their years working in Northern France, the café offers a variety of hot meals and snacks as well as excellent Fairtrade tea and coffee and delicious homemade cakes.
