Liberal Democrats have long supported the "Twenty's Plenty"campaign for reduced speed limits near schools and in appropriate residential areas. Now the County are consulting on introducing these safety measures.

Cllr Nick Hollinghurst (Tring and the Villages) said "We welcome the news that following their thorough review of speed limits last week, the Overview and Scrutiny Committee supports the wider introduction of 20mph limits in Hertfordshire.

"The new draft Speed Management Strategy which is currently in consultation introduces two key changes. One is the adoption of average speeds rather than top speeds when assessing the suitability of roads for 20mph limits. The second is recognition that signage-only speed limit schemes are worthwhile and a more economical alternative to the use of expensive humps and bumps previously required by County policy.

"These changes, if adopted, will bring our Speed Management Strategy into line with current Government guidance on local speed limits set out in DfT circular 01/2013. This aims to encourage all highways authorities to introduce more 20mph limits in residential areas over time.

If you think that reduced speed limits near schools and in residential areas is a good idea, then please engage in the consultation and encourage other people to do so too.
