Well Done Janet Reeves and Bishop Wood School, Tring!
Last week I was very pleased to accompany Val Male from Herts County Council's "Safer Routes to Schools" Dept on a visit to Bishop Wood School.
Val was there to present a certificate to Mrs Janet Reeves to recognise her work encouraging young people and their parents to walk, scoot or cycle to and from school - instead of just using the car.
I was amazed at the way the school has responded to a national campaign called 'Modeshift' which encourages moves away from car use towards healthier and more sustainable modes of transport.
Many parents for a number of good reasons still have to use a car to take their children to school, of course. Even so you can still get healthy exercise with "Ride and Stride" - park in a convenient car park and walk the rest of the way to school.
Mrs Male asked for hands to go up, and when "Ride and Stride", scooting, cycling and walking had been called out nearly every young person had their hands up. It looked like better than 90% to me!
Janet received a certificate as an individual from a national competition as having been the Runner Up in the Education Authority section. She'd been entered by HCC as the Bishop Wood School Travel Champion.
So well done, Janet - and well done too all the parents and young people at Bishop Wood!
