Tring and Berkhamsted Urban Transport Plan: Improving Cycling Links - Tring Station
The Urban Transport Plan is designed to encourage a shift away from cars for commuters using Tring Station. Due to the distance from the town centre it is vital that the station caters for cyclists and currently has just 125 places available. Plans would increase the number of places available to 237 for the future as well as improve access for cyclists.
In addition to the current proposal for 12 covered cycle parking places adjacent to the forecourt entrance:
- Introduce a two-level cycle parking area on the forecourt and shorten the existing cycle parking area to increase the motorcycle parking.
- Remove two car parking spaces next to the decked car park and provide two-level cycle parking on the eastern side of the railway
- Use the space behind the existing taxi office.
These proposals include the provision of CCTV cameras as well as a review of lighting to ensure the parking areas are lit to a comfortable standard and made secure.
As part of the initiative to promote environmentally friendly travel, the Urban Plan also includes a further cycle link between Pitstone Village and Tring Station. This would, in turn, improve cycle access between Tring town centre and the Pitstone development.
Funding has been obtained from the DoT's Local Sustainable Transport Fund and this will benefit Tring and Berkhamsted in improved cycle links, cycle parking and signage as well as the provision of bike hire facilities.
One of the elements in the application for funding was the provision of electric bicycles to support the use of sustainable forms of transport for tourism in Berkhamsted. Since Berkhamsted is notorious for it's steep gradients these powered bikes should make cycling an easier choice in that town!
