Tring 700 Celebrations Continue - Derek Townsend's Big Day
This year, as we hope everybody knows by now, is the 700th Anniversary of the granting of Tring's Market Charter by Edward II, by the grace of God, King of England, Lord of Scotland and Duke of Aquitaine.
And the programme of events rolls on...
Derek Townsend has served Tring, Dacorum and Hertfordshire well over the years as a town and borough councillor and as a Deputy Lieutenant.
Some years ago his hard work and achievements on behalf of the community were recognised by his appointment as an Alderman and Freeman of the Borough of Dacorum.
One of the privileges of being a Freeman is having the right to drive a flock of sheep through the town - and the Charter Celebrations were too good an opportunity to miss.
Here, adorned in a traditional smock and wielding a shepherd's crook, we see Derek, accompanied by this year's Green Man, David Metcalfe, an assistant shepherd and the nervous owner of the sheep, local farmer, Keith Slade (whose left shoulder is just about visible at the edge of the pic).
