TRING 20MPH ROAD SAFETY ZONE. HAVE YOU HAD YOUR SAY?

A 20 mph Zone is being proposed for South West Tring. Locally there are several such schemes that have been in operation for many years, e.g. in Berkhamsted.

There are many reasons why we should do this, but some of the benefits are that we get quieter and safer streets, with less stress and air pollution in the places where we live. This is especially important for young families, and the calming effect of slower traffic will increase security, well-being and socialisation across the community. The zone will include streets like Longfield Road, where the pioneering Play Out scheme is now well established, and other, similar roads where social events such as Street Parties are proving popular.

In addition a formal 20 mph down the High Street will give everyone more confidence in crossing from side to side of this busy thoroughfare. There are now several new developments in the town that are particularly suitable to retired people and we have more active elderly people living close to the High Street and using the shops and other facilities on a daily basis.

The move of the venue for the two markets has proved a great success, but being spread across both sides of the High Street this too stimulates more people to cross and recross the road.

Please note that the scheme takes in the narrow stretch of Dundale Road on the hill, as well as Fromore Street to protect the entrance to Bishop Wood School at a complicate highway situation where a zebra crossing couldn't be fitted in.

Altogether such zones encourage people to be more active, improve safety for all and generally improve health and well-being.

At the moment an informal consultation is taking place and you have until 25th March to reply - by letter to Herts Highways, PO Box 153, Stevenage SG1 2GH, or by e-mail to tro@hertfordshire.gov.uk. Please use "Tring SW 20mph Zone" as a reference. Have your say.
