Dacorum Council chiefs have justified a rise in the 2015/16 council tax charge saying it means borough services like bin collections and street cleaning will cost householders just 49p per day.
At Dacorum Borough Council's full council meeting last Wednesday, conservative councillors voted a 1.8 per cent increase to its portion of the charge.
Dacorum Borough Council keeps around 12% of the overall council tax charge. For an average (Band D) property the charge breaks down as follows:
£179.83 for Dacorum Borough Council's services
£1,141.09 goes to Herts County Council services
£147.82 goes to Herts Police
£1,468.74 Total (in areas not Parished)
Last week, Liberal Democrat County Councillors were shocked by the Tory-run County Council's decision to raise council tax by 1.99% this year, the maximum they can get away with before being forced to take it to a county-wide referendum.
Borough Councillor for Tring Central Nick Hollinghust, said "I am appalled that the Conservative administration is seeking to impose this on the people of Hertfordshire and by implication on Dacorum. There is Central Government funding available to help those Councils who seek to keep Council tax low to help local people. This year HCC Conservatives have decided they would rather raise the Council Tax by as much as they can while slashing services."
