Sprinklers Save Lives – Fire Sprinkler Week
Installing fire sprinklers in businesses and homes would dramatically reduce the number of lives lost in building fires and reduce the severity and cost of fire.
That's why Hertfordshire County Council's Fire and Rescue service supported the first ever national sprinkler week (3-9 February).
Sprinkler systems have been proven to save lives and also reduce injuries for firefighters attending incidents. Because they stop fires spreading in the early stages and only activate at the site of a fire, sprinklers also cause significantly less water damage than using hoses.
In the UK there have been no reported deaths from a fire in a domestic dwelling installed with a sprinkler system.
Roy Wilsher, Director of Community Protection and Chief Fire Officer, said: "Not only do sprinklers prevent lives being lost in a fire, they also make the work of firefighters much safer. The sooner these are fitted as standard, the sooner we'll see an end to people losing their lives in fires. The cost of installing sprinklers is minimal compared to the potential risks and costs associated with a fire."
