Snow clearing - dos and dont's

Mixed gender snow wardens - winter 2012/13

With winter weather on its way it is good to remind ourselves of how to be a good neighbour by helping keep paths clear of snow, especially helping those neighbours who are elderly or disabled.

Official advice can be found on the Government website here https://www.gov.uk/clear-snow-road-path-cycleway

Basically:

  • Never use hot water to melt the snow - it just ends up freezing, making it more dangerous
  • After clearing the snow spread salt or even sand / ash help melt snow or provide grip. They will also help stop the ground re-freezing after it was cleared of snow.
  • Council grit bins can be used to spread on public roads and pavements but not on private property.

Finally don't believe the myths - it's unlikely you'll be sued or held legally responsible for any injuries if you have cleared the path carefully. Follow the 'snow code' see this advice from the MetOffice http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/barometer/get-ready-for-winter/your-home-in-winter/the-snow-code

Note - Hertfordshire Highways @herts_highways updates their twitter feed with #GritterTwitter posts to let you know when they will be out gritting the roads.
