The video called 'Making food waste history' can be viewed at www.hertsdirect.org/foodwaste and has already had more than 60,000 views on YouTube.

It aims to help residents reduce their food waste and save money through four simple steps: plan ahead, store correctly, cook what you need and recycle what you can't eat.

Through an engaging time-travelling theme the video tackles issues such as storage, portioning and cooking with leftovers, sharing tips and advice.

With more than 7m tonnes of food and drink going to waste every year from UK households, food waste is a massive issue. In Hertfordshire, food accounts for approximately 30 per cent of waste in the general waste bin even though kerbside food waste recycling for both cooked and uncooked food is available for the majority of residents.

This disposal of food waste costs Hertfordshire taxpayers approximately £6.8m a year.

The tips in the new video will help Hertfordshire residents to make food waste history in their home.
