Sally Symington standing as Lib Dem Candidate for County in Bridgewater and for Borough in Berkhamsted West
Sally Symington has lived near Potten End for twenty years. As Chair of Great Gaddesden Parish Council she campaigned for greater equity in expenditure on rural areas, improvements to the local broadband service, affordable rural housing, sensible and appropriate speed restrictions on rural roads and in particular restrictions on the weight and volume of traffic passing through the small but beautiful hamlet of Water End.
Sally is the trustee of a local charity which funds a team of nurses who provide hospice-at-home care for children with life-limiting conditions. She worked in the Constitution Unit at University College London as a researcher during the 2015 General Election having completed an MSc in Public Policy from University College London. Earlier in her career, Sally worked in the financial services industry as an institutional fund manager and equity analyst. She has a degree in Physics from Bristol University.
She very much wants to represent the people of Bridgewater. She believes in representative and deliberative democracy and feel that the current Conservative administration (at all levels: borough, county and parliamentary), fails to represent the views of many of the voters in the division. The hitherto huge Tory majority and historic lack of opposition in the division have meant that voters have been taken for granted. She wants to speak up for the many residents whose voice has been lost.
Sally has been inspired to enter politics by the arguments of the political philosopher, Michael Sandel, in developing arguments for morality in public life. His exposition of the concept of the common good pursuaded her to standing for public office and pursue a better politics with greater integrity of purpose and outcome.
Sally would bring a wealth of skills and experience to the roles of County and Borough Councillor if elected. She has represented local residents on Great Gaddesden Parish Council where she was Chair for many years. She has also worked on the Watling Ward Neighbourhood Action Group, campaigning actively and successfully for improved services and for a fairer share of funding for the parish from Dacorum Borough Council. She has worked with Herts Highways on proposed solutions for the problems on the A4146 at Water End and with the Rural Special Constables on rural safety issues and was instrumental in producing the Great Gaddesden Parish Plan which set many of the council's priorities for the local community.
