Safety Measures in Stocks Road, Aldbury to Protect Horses and Riders at a busy Stables
We should always drive carefully, but we should take especially care not to frighten horses. Apart from causing injury to itself a frightened, bolting horse could easily throw or otherwise injure a rider - or any nearby pedestrian.
Right at the end of Stocks Road there is a busy stables which uses land on either side of the lane. This issue was originally taken up by Rosemarie Hollinghurst when she was a Dacorum Borough Council. However, as she was not re-elected her husband County Councillor Nick Hollinghurst took up the cause.
In order to protect not only the stables but also Stocks Garden Cottages, Stocks Barns and other nearby properties Nick Hollinghurst has signed off on a safety scheme for this part of Aldbury. The 40 mph speed limit is to be extended to the county boundary, three SLOW signs are to be painted on the road and two "Accompanied Horses" warning sign erected. The scheme was somewhat delayed by the need to repeat some of the vehicle speed measurements.
The cost will be £5,733. About £233 for the painting, £2,500 for the speed measurements, surveys, design work and erecting the signs and about £3,000 for the leagal work - guesstimates of course, but you get the picture!
