The number of families on the brink of homelessness has risen sharply over the last 5 years. In the year up to last March local authorities in England helped 205,100 families, a 46% rise over the last 5 years. There is an increasing serious shortage of affordable housing, and growing funding pressure, made worse by the campaign to sell off affordable housing through Right To Buy changes. Most of these families have no chance of being able to buy their own homes. In Three Rivers homeless families have to be accommodated as far away as Stansted. You can imagine the impact on children and their schooling.

Recently as part of the police speeding awareness campaign local councillors were asked to identify the roads where there is a problem. Some of us joined the police for a while on site to witness the process. The campaign was primarily to issue warnings to speeding drivers but in the event of excessive speed violations more formal responses were applied. Across the District 11 drivers were issued with traffic offence reports which will lead to fines and points, a place on a course may be offered where appropriate. 60 drivers received a verbal warning or a police warning letter. One was dealt with for possession of cannabis.

To add to last week's information about Three Rivers House, the 65 photovoltaic solar panels are expected to generate 14,000kwh each year which will save over 6 tonnes of carbon and reduce TRDC's electricity bills.
