Liberal Democrats Support the Living Wage Campaign

Liberal Democrats in Government have worked hard to ensure that from next April the personal tax allowance will have risen to £10,000. This will take over 2.7m low earners out of tax altogether, and deliver a tax cut worth £700 per year to 24m low and middle earners. We want to go further, and raise the tax allowance to the point which means that no one on minimum wage has to pay income tax at all.

Liberal Democrats support the Living Wage as highlighted in the recent Resolution Foundation report, and at our Autumn Conference we will consider a motion calling for the creation of a commission to establish an official living wage. The motion also calls for Central Government to pay the living wage and encourage local government to lead by example. The motion also calls for a requirement that companies with more than 250 employees have to be transparent about how many of their employees are not earning the living wage.
