On Wednesday 30 January at Watford Borough Council's meeting, the Liberal Democrat Elected Mayor of Watford, Dorothy Thornhill, proposed a council tax freeze for 2013/14, which the Council agreed.

The freeze fulfils the Mayor's strategic objective that any council tax increases should be below inflation and will result in Watford Borough Council's share of council tax for Band D households being £249.84, unchanged from 2012/13.

Dorothy Thornhill, Elected Mayor of Watford, said: "The good news for residents is that we are freezing council tax again which means the average household is paying under £5 a week for the many services we continue to provide, whether it is emptying their waste and recycling bins each week, cleaning streets or providing excellent parks and leisure facilities, to name a few.

"The council has made ten successive years of below inflation increases in line with my manifesto pledge, thanks to year on year savings. At the same time we have seen residents' satisfaction of our waste services increase to 93% for recycling collections and 97% for domestic waste collections. We have also launched our new housing service, which combines increased efficiency with financial savings."
