Liberal Democrat Progress - A Good Week of By Election Results

With two gains, two holds and progress everywhere it really has been a good week. However, the star result had to be a Liberal Democrat GAIN in Newlyn & Goonhavern (Cornwall) from the Conservatives. Both the Tory and the Mebyon Kernow leaving the Lib Dems ahead with 24% in a fragmented field.

Newlyn & Goonhavern (Cornwall UA) 28th July
LIB DEM: 24.4% (+24.4)
CONS: 23.1% (-23.0)
IND: 16.1% (+16.1)
MK: 15.9% (-28.1)
LAB: 7.6% (-2.2)
IND: 7.4%
IND: 5.3%

A successful hold by Lib Dems in St Julians Ward in the Newport Unitary Authority, Wales as their vote share increased by 12%, Labour collapsed, the Tories fell back and Green only got 1.4%. Result below.

St Julians (Newport UA) 28th July
LIB DEM: 53.7% (+11.6)
LABOUR: 24.4% (-20.3)
UKIP: 8.8% (+8.8)
CONS: 7.6% (-5.5)
PC: 4.0% (+4.0)
GRN: 1.4% (+1.4)

In Harringay Ward in Haringey London Borough, both Lib Dems and Labour increased vote share by 3.7% each as Labour comfortably held the seat and Greens and Tories fell back.

In Sutton London Borough the Lib Dems held the seat even though the Tory vote shot up as UKIP voters returned home.

Carshalton Central Ward (LB Sutton) 28th July
LDEM: 43.4% (+5.1)
CON: 36.9% (+11.6)
GRN: 7.3% (-0.3)
LAB: 6.1% (-3.1)
UKIP: 5.2% (-10.5)
CPA: 1.0% (-1.1)

Finally in a weirdly named Hampshire ward the Lib Dems fielded a candidate for the first time and very nearly won - with 44% of the vote! The Tories just held on with 45%.

CONS: 45.3% (-23.7)
LIB DEM: 43.6% (+43.6)
JUST: 7.9% (+7.9)
LAB: 3.3% (-9.7)
