Lib Dem Mayor Dorothy Thornhill Chosen as Watford's Candidate
Liberal Democrat party members in Watford Constituency have chosen Dorothy Thornhill (the elected Mayor of Watford) as the Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate for 2015.
Party members had a choice of candidates between Cllr Rabi Martins, Hugh Annand and Dorothy.
Dorothy was elected in the first round of voting and was the clear choice of party members. Both Hugh and Rabi have pledged their support and help.
Following her selection Dorothy said. "I want to say thank you to the people who voted for me and commiserations to the other candidates, it was a great contest. It's a great privilege to be chosen and I am looking forward to getting out on the campaign trail and speaking to as many residents as I can.
"It's going to be a hard fight but it's GAME ON. I am determined to give this campaign my all to try and become Watford's voice in Westminster.
"My heart and home is in Watford, and I want to ensure our voice is heard loud and clear in Westminster. Watford needs someone who will back our new Health Campus plans, complete the Croxley Rail link and ensure that Watford and Three Rivers area gets a fair deal. My track record for the last 12 years as Mayor should give Watford constituency residents the confidence that I will deliver for them as MP too."
Following the selection of Dorothy Thornhill several bookmakers have now ranked the Liberal Democrats favourite to win the seat ahead of Labour and the sitting Conservative.
The Liberal Democrat Campaign Leader, Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst said, "People know Dorothy well and like the work that she has done for the area. That's why they have re-elected her three times. She is going to bring all her passion for the constituency to Westminster when she is elected.
"Dorothy and the Lib Dem team in Watford and Three Rivers have a track record of winning in the area, beating the Tories, Labour and UKIP in the elections this year. We are looking forward to her being Watford's voice in Westminster next year."
At the last General Election the Liberal Democrats missed winning the marginal seat by just 1,426 votes. Labour came third more than 3,000 votes behind the Liberal Democrats. The Liberal Democrats consider the seat as a top target to gain from the Conservatives and despite the difficult years of the coalition government have retained overwhelming majorities of the local Councils, Watford and Three Rivers that cover the seat, and Dorothy easily won the elected Mayor position in May which saw the Conservatives come bottom of the vote.
