All in all, the Liberal Democrats did well in Thursday's (25/914) council by-elections. Though losing Frome North in Somerset to the Tories, the Lib Dems were cheered, not only by the Epping Forest result but also a remarkable win in Guildford's Lovelace Ward, with a swing of 47% where their candidate leapt from 3rd to 1st place.

As reported in Portsmouth News over the 12 council by-elections fought during September the voting shares averaged at: LAB 35% CON 27% LD 24% UKIP 19%
