Calling Young People!
More and more young people are joining the Lib Dems ... Come on board and help us build a better, fairer Britain!
Change was inevitable once Labour introduced tuition fees in 1998 - but then failed to fund universities adequately. Labour increased fees until the top rate reached £3,290. But despite manifesto plans to fund tuition differently, the Liberal Democrats in government were forced by their coalition partners to follow the Browne Report recommendations and bring in further drastic rises in fees - as we all know.
Since then the Liberal Democrats have successfully changed the repayment scheme to make it fairer for young people.
- No repayments till earnings top £21,000. Everyone pays less per month than under Labour
- A graduate on £25,000 earnings now repays £30 a month. It was £75 under Labour
- Help for poorer graduates, who pay 30% less overall, while the richest pay 1% more
And for other young people the Liberal Democrats have brought in more apprenticeships - in fact 2/3 more than under Labour.
But more generally we have a massive programme of Fairness and Reform - a better deal for young people on public transport is just one of our many campaigns.
