Calling for prevention of possessions and evictions over the Christmas period

20 Dec 2022

As this winter of discontent worsens to a winter of despair and the cost-of-living crisis deepens, the Liberal Democrats and Victoria Collins are calling on the Government to bring in an emergency ban on banks repossessing people's homes over the Christmas period and immediately bring in its long-promised ban on no-fault evictions.

Liberal Democrat analysis has revealed possession and evictions across South West Hertfordshire, in Three Rivers District and Dacorum District. In Three Rivers there were five mortgage possession warrants and 14 tenant evictions in the last 12 months. In Dacorum there were seven mortgage possession warrants, three mortgage repossessions and 30 tenant evictions in the last 12 months. Behind each one of those numbers are people and families who are struggling to make ends meet.

Talking to residents across this constituency, more and more are concerned about rising costs. The government must act now to ensure that no one should face losing their home over Christmas. Our proposals also include an increase in housing benefits and a moratorium on evictions based on rent arrears to protect those facing soaring rental prices, as well as a Mortgage Protection Fund to support homeowners hardest hit by soaring mortgage prices.
