Following the sad death of John Lythgoe of Hall Park, Berkhamsted, the former Liberal Democrat Town Councillor, a By Election is to be held on Thursday June 13th to fill the vacancy in the Berkhamsted East Ward of the Berkhamsted Town Council.

The Liberal Democrat candidate is local resident Danny Bonnett. Danny graduated in engineering at Cambridge University and, now a Chartered Engineer, worked for Arup, the well-known engineering design consultancy for several years before joining RES in Kings Langley some 10 years ago.

RES will be familiar to most people locally from their demonstration wind turbine close to the junction of the A41 and the M25. The company installs wind turbines all over the world and also has expertise in several other types of sustainable technology.

He and his wife, Jo, who is a structural engineer, live in Bank Mill Lane within the ward and came to Berkhamsted with their young family 9 years ago. Their two daughters currently attend Victoria School.

Danny says, "Working in renewable energy you learn a lot about sustainable living. In common with many families with young children, we became increasingly concerned about the world we are leaving to the next generation. Some years ago there were good ideas coming from the Transition Town movement - so I helped to set up the local group, Transition Town Berkhamsted [ for details see http://transitionberkhamsted.org.uk ]".

Danny helped set up the Tring & Berkhamsted Cycle Group which has recently helped to develop safe routes to schools and better cycle ways in the Borough. He also started up the Kids Bikefest in Canal Fields, which is planned to run again in September.

Danny adds, "Living in East Ward and being a keen cyclist, residents can be assured that I take a close interest in the awful state of our pavements and roads - especially those dreadful potholes!"
