A5 to M1 Link - A New Key Road in East of England Region
A long time in the planning, but the Dunstable Northern By Pass - perhaps better described as the A5 to M1 Link - is now well under way.
It was finally approved for construction as one of the Coalition Government's economy-boosting infrastructure projects.
This long delayed link road will take traffic from the Leighton Buzzard By Pass, from where it ends at Thorn on the A5, to a new interchange with the M1 at Chalton.
This will massively improve road communication from Aylesbury and will provide a fast route round the south of Leighton Buzzard and the north of Houghton Regis avoiding Dunstable altogether and linking directly with the motorway system via the M1.
This is expected to significantly reduce traffic down the Gade Valley from Leighton Buzzard which comes into Hemel Hempstead on its way to join the M1 at Junction 8.
It is now proposed that the A4146, from its junction with the A505 near Leighton Buzzard to its junction with the A4147 Link Road in Hemel Hempstead is re-classified as the B440.
