Cllrs Nick and Rosemarie Hollinghurst from Tring were able to steal a day out of their busy schedules to do their bit in the recent Eastleigh By Election.

Here Nick takes a break between sessions of canvassing in freezing temperatures, warming up by filling envelopes in the Campaign HQ.

Nick said afterwards, "The weather might have been cold but the welcome on the doorsteps was in general warm and friendly. The incessant press and media attacks on the Liberal Democrats - which reached an orchestrated crescendo during the final week of the campaign - were rather blunted by the independence of mind of the people of Eastleigh."

"I was greatly impressed by their balanced response to the unfortunate events that had caused this by election. Obviously they had to be taken into account, but I heard great praise for Huhne as having been a good constituency MP - even from people who intended to vote for other parties. Clearly most electors carefully weighed up the track record of Mike Thornton and the local Liberal Democrat councillors against the claims of the competing candidates before reaching their decision as to who would best represent them."

"When Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats took the courageous decision to go into a coalition to save the country from political and financial instability, the national press and media immediately and gleefully predicted the electoral annihilation of our party. Well, we've seen them off! Instead we have become the only party in government to have won a by election in 30 years."
