£4.25 Million to be Invested in Cambridge Station Improvements
A property development scheme partly using railway land and aimed at providing more than 1,000 student units - the so-called CB1 Development - has generated significant funds to improve Cambridge Station. £4.25 million has been released by Brookgate, the Cambridge based company behind CB1, as part of a land deal with Network Rail and a 3-way agreement between Brookgate, Network Rail and Cambridge City Council.
Cambridge Station is managed by train operator Greater Anglia, who will use the funds to upgrade the building to improve concourse and construct a more modern and spacious ticket hall.
Greater Anglia is planning to start the work in late summer, with completion in mid-2014. They have said that they will in addition carry out a wider regeneration of the area, working with Network Rail and the developers. This further work will involve improvements to the station approach, an hotel and extensive cycle parking.
Hertfordshire County Councillor Nick Hollinghurst, who has an interest in public transport development, commented, "This is another example of how Liberal Democrat ministers working within the Coalition Government are pushing for infrastructure investment to boost the economy and provide useful facilities for the community. My own county is also involved in infrastructure development, most notably being the lead partner in the Croxley Rail Link to provide direct access to London Underground at Watford Junction Station on the West Coast Main Line. We are working hard to continue cleaning up Labour's economic mess."
